No one definition of editing fits every project. And often a project will need to undergo more than one level of editing. I offer a range of editorial services, from the big picture to the smallest of details. Most importantly, before I begin work, we will decide together what type of editing is most appropriate for the current state of your project and your goals.
This level of editing looks at the piece as a whole. It assesses whether the manuscript has achieved what it set out to do (in other words, does it adequately support your thesis?) and makes edits and suggestions for how to strengthen it. It may include reorganizing text for greater flow and logic, deleting superfluous or repetitive text, suggesting areas where material may need to be added, identifying areas where the ideas and logic are unclear. (Note: this is not a peer review to assess the accuracy or completeness of your ideas.) A content/developmental edit requires more interaction between the editor and author than other types of edits to refine the author's intentions and to collaborate on solutions. As such, multiple rounds of edits are often required.
You will receive: detailed feedback in the form of comments and edits in the manuscript. We will decide beforehand if you or I will implement the suggestions.
This service is for you if: you need an assessment about where your manuscript isn't working and detailed feedback about how to fix it.
Do you have a first draft or partial draft and are unsure of what to do next or if the project is worth continuing? I will assess your project and identify up to three main areas that need revising so you can more effectively direct your efforts going forward.
You will receive: a written analysis in the form of a letter (two to four pages) that will give you a roadmap to follow for the next draft.
This service is for you if: you need broad feedback to determine where to focus your efforts and are confident in making the revisions yourself.
I will help your realize your vision for your project by coaching you through the writing process and helping you develop confidence in your abilities. We can brainstorm to develop your concepts into an outline or table of contents, review each chapter as you compete it, and discuss how to strengthen any weak points.
You will receive: We will meet regularly (either in person in Atlanta or via phone/Skype) to review your latest material and to discuss the challenges you are facing and how to overcome them. You will come away from the meeting confident about taking the next step.
This service is for you if: you need help developing the structure and focus of your manuscript and detailed feedback as you write.
Line Editing & Copyediting
Line editing occurs at the paragraph and sentence level focusing on refining clarity, flow, and style. Does each sentence and paragraph flow into the next? Is the text clear and readable? Are the ideas accessible to readers? Copyediting is concerned with the mechanics of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and consistency. It is the last chance to ensure that the mechanics are correct before the manuscript is typeset and proofread. Depending on the length and state of the manuscript, line editing and copyediting may be combined.
You will receive: your manuscript with edits made directly in the text using Word's tracking changes and comments feature to identifying ideas that are unclear. Suggested corrections will be given, where possible.
This service is for you if: your manuscript has already undergone a content/developmental edit or its content is well organized, logical, and supports your main thesis.
Want to self-publish your book but don't know where to start? Need help figuring out which self-publishing platform is right for you? Want a professionally designed book but don't know how to get that accomplished? In this age of DIY, sometimes we still need a real human voice, rather than a YouTube video or how-to ebook—a conversation that can clear up lingering questions and give you guidance attuned to your goals and situation.
You will receive: a one-on-one conversation via phone or Skype during which I will give you an overview of the self-publishing process and answer all your questions. By the end of the consultation you will feel confident about what you need to do and how to do it. I can also provide ongoing support via email or phone/Skype as you navigate the process.
This service is for you if: you need guidance about any aspect of the self-publishing process.
